This historic Edcarleigh Estate real estate auction and subdivision print captures Elsternwick at a time when the suburb was still taking shape. Centred on Brighton Road and Glen Huntly Road, the map outlines early allotments and planning that would help define one of Melbourne’s most enduring inner suburbs.
Produced in the late 1800s as a promotional land sale piece, the print reflects Elsternwick’s transition from semi-rural land into a connected residential area. It’s particularly notable for its depiction of Point Nepean Road, which on this map is also referred to as “Or Arthur Seat Road” — a reminder of how road names were often fluid in the nineteenth century, evolving as routes were formalised and settlements expanded.
While many of the roads shown remain familiar today, others appear under names that later changed, were absorbed into larger routes, or may never have progressed beyond surveyor’s plans. This blend of the recognisable and the speculative offers a fascinating insight into how Elsternwick’s future was once imagined.
Fun fact: In the 1800s, long coastal routes like Point Nepean Road were often named for their destination rather than the suburb they passed through — which is why the same road could appear under multiple names on early maps.
