In the late 1800s, Coburg was known less for its cafes and more for its quarries — 41 of them to be exact — as bluestone paved the city’s streets and built its future. But Coburg's industrial roots run deeper than stone alone.

In 1850, the imposing HM Prison Pentridge opened its gates, etching Coburg into Victoria’s darker folklore. Prisoners, sentenced to “hard labour,” smashed through the very rocks that built Melbourne, and in doing so, helped shape the suburb's distinctive edge.
